Thanksgiving Point Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit farm, garden and museum complex that draws upon the natural world to cultivate transformative family learning.

Purpose:

This position is responsible for effective management of large scale Ashton Garden-based shows and events, focusing on the "Luminaria" winter light experience, along with supervising ongoing horticultural maintenance property-wide throughout the year.

 

Responsibilities and Requirements: As the internal project manager for Luminaria, performs a variety of highly skilled duties such as:

  • Determine timeline for Luminaria installation and de-installation, working closely with Horticulture Specialist and Director of Signature Experiences and collaborating with other team members involved in planning the show
  • Determines labor needs for installation, upkeep, and de-installation of Luminaria exhibit elements, called "Beats"
  • Develop and implement a work plan and team schedules for Luminaria and ongoing horticulture maintenance property-wide
  • Facilitate and troubleshoot the problems associated with implementing a Luminaria: a complex garden-based event, including horticultural impacts, technological needs, coordination of separate internal and external teams
  • Responsible for procurement, organization, storage, and maintenance of Luminaria lights, equipment, and supplies
  • Oversee physical maintenance during Luminaria, including lighting, solving power issues, ensuring walking paths are clear, and garbage is consistently removed
  • Provide highly skilled technical and management advice and assistance to Horticultural Specialist and Director of Signature Experiences
  • Responds to inquiries about all aspects of Luminaria project implementation

As a supervisor for ongoing horticultural maintenance property-wide, performs a variety of duties such as:

  • Identifies diseases, insects, weeds, and nutritional problems then finds and implements appropriate solutions, including appropriate application of pesticides
  • Sets watering schedules to the needs of various plants
  • Ensures that proper pruning practices are used on trees and shrubs
  • Manages multiple projects, set priorities, and supervises team members to meet deadlines and maintenance expectations

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or related field or comparable experience in the industry
  • 5 years of successful project management experience
  • Strong, demonstrated coordination and collaboration skills
  • Experience working with large-scale seasonal light displays
  • Knowledge of proper pruning practices
  • Ability to identify and treat plant diseases, insects, weeds, and nutritional problems
  • Ability to program watering schedules to meet the needs of various plants and zones
  • Ability to work actively in outdoor settings year-round, climb ladders, bend and kneel, lift and carry 75 pounds, and stand for extended periods of time
  • Valid Utah Driver's License
  • Valid Utah Pesticide License
  • Must pass a background check to be eligible

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Conversational or fluent in Spanish strongly preferred
  • Experience working in a greenhouse a plus

 

Shift Hours and Days Required:

  • This is a full-time benefitted, salaried position
  • Weekly schedule will reflect the Luminaria project needs and the ongoing horticultural needs as determined in collaboration with Horticulture Specialist
  • Generally available Monday through Saturday with some nights required
  • This position has local travel associated with it
