Thanksgiving Point Employee Membership

Thanksgiving Point Institute is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit farm, garden and museum complex that draws upon the natural world to cultivate transformative family learning.

JOB DESCRIPTION:  Explorers are key members of Thanksgiving Point's Education Department and are responsible for interacting with guests of all ages at our institute's key experiences: Museum of Ancient Life, Farm Country, Ashton Gardens, and the Museum of Natural Curiosity. As part of Thanksgiving Point's mission to engage in transformative family learning, Explorers have a unique opportunity to support people (across the lifespan) in learning that is authentic, connected directly to lived experience, and helps to answer questions of keen interest to visitors and guests. This form of learning, known as inquiry-based learning, is the foundation of our work and is infused throughout the education and facilitation that occurs here at Thanksgiving Point. We seek to create an environment where play is seen as integral to authentic and transformative learning.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Explorers have four major areas of responsibility:

1) Guest and Visitor Facilitation at our Museums and Experiences. Explorers have a unique responsibility to interact with guests and to enhance their experience at Thanksgiving Point through well-planned, thoughtful, and inquiry-based facilitation. In their role as floor facilitators, Explorers interact with guests and support them in remaining curious about their learning by expanding upon and supporting them in their own engagement and question-asking process.

2) Educational Outreach and Partnerships are integral to the work we do at Thanksgiving Point; supporting inquiry-based learning outside of our campus and interacting with guests, visitors, students, classroom teachers and more. Explorers will be responsible for well-planned and highly interactive learning through myriad educational programs that support curiosity and a love of learning; including but not limited to: Tulips Journey North, Curiosity in the Classroom, Tulip Festival, and more.

3) Birthday Parties, Camps and Classes are another staple at Thanksgiving Point. By remaining committed to inquiry-based learning, Explorers will interact with guests to provide high quality and engaging learning experiences that expand upon the mission of Thanksgiving Point through directed learning experiences that are subject specific such as Summer Day Camps, Early Childhood Education, Digging-in-the-Dirt Programs and more.

4) Collaborative Decision Making is the final area of responsibility for explorers. In this area, Explorers will be working within 'Cog Leadership Groups' to support the ongoing and specific goals and objectives of our department. Within the 'Cog System' Explorers work collaboratively with education department staff to create goals and set leadership objectives for the department. 'Cogs' serve as a primary place of innovation and leadership for Thanksgiving Point's Education Department and are crucial to our ongoing success.

SHIFT HOURS AND DAYS REQUIRED: Explorers must be available to work a minimum of 15 hours per week; including having open availability on Saturdays. Typically, shifts are available Monday through Saturday as early as 8AM and as late as 9PM with occasional shifts beginning at 6AM for outreach visits or as late as 12:00 AM for special events. Our Department is committed to working with our staff to not only ensure adequate coverage of our programs but to provide support for those who have a keen interest and skill-set in working with us and will contribute significantly to our mission of transformative learning.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS: We encourage all individuals with a deep love of learning to apply to be Explorers at Thanksgiving Point and are interested in supporting folks with subject specific knowledge such as early-childhood education, adolescent development and learning, STEM, arts and social justice, bilingual/bicultural education, and more. Additionally, we seek candidates who have a genuine interest and investment in their own professional learning and development; understanding that we most model in ourselves (transformative learning) what we facilitate with our visitors and guests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: At least one (1) year of education, teaching, or facilitation experience in formal, informal, or community-based settings; An understanding of inquiry-based education and a desire to support the mission of Thanksgiving Point in our transformative learning work; and the ability to pass a criminal background check.

  • A deep understanding of inquiry-based learning and how to facilitate this type of learning across the human lifespan.
  • Keep knowledge and passion in the following areas: horticulture, adolescent development, bilingual/bicultural education, and early-childhood education.
