Thanksgiving Point, one of the coolest places around, is seeking a curious innovator and empathetic leader for the position of Curator of Curiosity/Director of Education. Thanksgiving Point is a 501(c)3 multi-museum, farm, and garden complex that draws upon the natural world to cultivate transformative family learning. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about this mission and especially the opportunity to work alongside and lead a highly collaborative team of ridiculously awesome and creative folk.

 

Position Summary

The Curator of Curiosity/Director of Education is part of the Thanksgiving Point Joint Management team and ensures that all venues, exhibits, programs, and Education Department team members promote curiosity and inquiry for the millions of guests that Thanksgiving Point welcomes each year. Thanksgiving Point values the process of discovery over content acquisition and employs inquiry-based informal education strategies, empathy, and play in all aspects of its programming and guest interactions.

 

The Curator of Curiosity/Director of Education is part of the core creative team and collaborates on and informs the design, construction, and refinement of all Thanksgiving Point venues and exhibitions, ensuring that they promote transformative family learning and curiosity.  

 

Most importantly, the Curator of Curiosity/Director of Education leads the Education Department and all educational programming across multiple venues including: The Museum of Ancient Life; Farm Country; Ashton Gardens; The Museum of Natural Curiosity; and the forthcoming Butterfly Biosphere; as well as offsite and statewide outreach programs. 

 

The Curator of Curiosity/Director of Education is responsible for cultivating and supporting a highly-collaborative and creative team of between 40 75 Explorers, who share program leadership and direction in addition to their primary responsibilities for direct delivery of programs. This person is not a micro-manager, but an effective and dynamic leader who inspires team members to set, meet, and exceed high expectations. This person coaches team members, guiding them and providing the resources, training, and tools they need to be successful Explorers and collaborative, confident leaders in their own right.

 

 

Position Responsibilities

Responsible for Education team leadership and oversight, including inclusive hiring, delivering essential and appropriate training, and providing ongoing team member support.

 

Responsible for oversight and management of a broad suite of Educational programming, including revenue-generating and value-added programs, ensuring that they are inclusive, accessible, inquiry-based, and mission focused.

 

Responsible for the oversight and close management of a 7-figure Education Department budget, including meeting monthly and annual revenue goals, tracking/controlling all department expenses, and ensuring grant funds are appropriately applied and accounted for.

 

Responsible for effective communication and meaningful collaboration with all Thanksgiving Point departments as a member of the Joint Management Team, to drive forward the mission, address challenges, and enact the strategic plan.

 

Responsible for participation on the core creative team, working collaboratively with other members to inform the design and development of new projects and refinement of existing assets.

 

Responsible for developing and cultivating productive relationships with community partners to enhance Education Department programs, their reach and impact, and to drive forward the mission. Current partnerships include: national, state, and local agencies; universities; business and industry; LEAs; museums; and other non-profit and community organizations.

 

Responsible for collaboration on and support for all fundraising efforts including sponsorships and grants and tracking and evaluating holistic program and participant data.

 

Responsible for other duties as assigned by the VP of Design and Programming.

 

Position Requirements

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Education or museum degree a plus.

 

At least 10 years of experience in museum/informal education, and a minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership/management role.

 

Demonstrated experience employing inquiry-based strategies for facilitation, program/curriculum development, and team member training.

 

Demonstrated success leading collaborative teams and uniting diverse voices around a common goal.

 

Understanding of and comfort with inquiry-based pedagogies and best informal educational practices, along with demonstrated success implementing inquiry-based programming.

 

Experience managing and administering government and/or foundation grants.

 

Intimate working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite of applications and ability to translate data into meaningful reports, sets, and summaries.

 

Position Details

This is a full time benefitted position with hours of work generally from 8:00 5:00 Monday through Friday. This person will work on some weekends, evenings, and holidays in order to support fundraising efforts and to participate in and support programming and team members.

 

Valid Driver's license is required (Utah License will be necessary to be covered by insurance).

 

Must pass a background check as there is a lot of interaction with our young guests.
